Socialist Action () is a Trotskyist political organisation in Hong Kong. It is affiliated to the Committee for a Workers' International.〔http://chinaworker.info/hhk/about-us-hk/〕
It works closely with the Committee for a Workers' International (CWI) sections in China and Taiwan. It describes itself as being based on the method and analysis of Marxism, to politically re-arm and organise the working class in the fight for a socialist world. They oppose the billionaire-dominated Chinese Communist Party (CCP) dictatorship, which they claim has made China the 'Sweatshop of the World' with one of the most extreme wealth gaps on the planet. They stand for the creation of fighting independent trade unions by Chinese workers to fight against capitalist exploitation and authoritarian rule.
Socialist Action calls for Hong Kong's undemocratic 'CY' administration to be driven from office. They also criticise the main pan democratic opposition parties in Hong Kong for adopting a timid approach that aims to achieve piecemeal democratic reforms through compromise and negotiation – a strategy that Socialist Action claims is incapable of success against a dictatorial regime like China's. This is because the Chinese regime fears that any slackening of its political control could cause the "dam to burst", inspiring massive popular movements in China that could sweep the regime away.〔http://www.thestandard.com.hk/news_detail.asp?pp_cat=31&art_id=150396&sid=43164299&con_type=1〕 Socialist Action plays an active part in many struggles – workers' strikes, environmental protests and campaigns for migrants' rights.〔http://chinaworker.info/en/2015/02/10/9319/〕 It stands for the building of a new working class party drawing support from today's mass struggles as the only way to overcome the resistance of the CCP dictatorship and achieve real democratic change.〔http://chinaworker.info/en/about-us-en/〕
==Origins==
Socialist Action was founded in 2010 by young activists involved in the Hong Kong by-election, 2010 (五區公投/五區總辭) campaign for universal suffrage which followed the resignation of five pro-democracy lawmakers from Hong Kong's Legislative Council (Legco). While supporting the general aims of this movement against the Hong Kong government's limited electoral reform proposals, Socialist Action campaigned behind the slogan "Realise democracy – Kick out the capitalists!" This was to, "to raise the flag of socialism and explain why the struggle for democratic rights must challenge capitalism in order to succeed."〔http://chinaworker.info/en/2011/05/16/5144/〕
Socialist Action's programme of democratic demands went considerably further than other pro-democracy parties involved in this campaign. In addition to supporting the movement's main demands for abolition of the legislature's elite-based functional constituencies and election of Hong Kong's Chief Executive by universal suffrage, Socialist Action also called for the lowering of the voting age to sixteen, the right of migrants to vote, for legislators to receive only a skilled workers' wage, and for the largely ceremonial Legco to be replaced by "a genuine People's Assembly with powers to tax the super-rich, abolish poverty, implement a decent minimum wage, reverse privatisations, and create real jobs!"〔http://www.socialistworld.net/doc/3788〕
Socialist magazine《社會主義者》was started in 2009 by mainland Chinese activists as an underground publication which is banned by the Chinese authorities. From 2010 Socialist Action began joint production of the magazine which is not banned in Hong Kong. Since 2011 a Taiwan edition of the magazine has also been produced.
